The Southeastern Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies was established in 1963 under the auspices of the Duke-UNC Cooperative Program in the Humanities. Supported by grant funding, summer institutes were held for the purpose of improving teaching and scholarship. Each institute consisted of seminars conducted by Senior Fellows and attended by Junior Fellows.
